Public Affairs & Communications Committee (PAC)

The purpose of the Public Affairs & Communications Committee (PAC) is to provide strategic advice to the KIC and act as a conduit to member expertise in the areas of public affairs, communications and stakeholder engagement. The group reviews and communicates research findings and assists other KIC committees to inform the broader community on industry initiatives around environmental sustainability, education and training, community health and lifestyle in a collaborative way.

The PAC has specific functions in

  • Providing strategic planning advice to the KIC specific to communications
  • Understanding stakeholder perceptions, including media analysis and response
  • Identifying collaborative opportunities to promote Kwinana industry and the KIC
  • Reviewing community investment requests

 

Committee Objectives
PAC's purpose is to advise the KIC on matters of critical importance in corporate public affairs, communications and stakeholder engagement. The group is a strategic one - assisting the Board and other KIC committees to provide accurate and timely information to its stakeholders on industry initiatives in a cooperative and collaborative way. PACAG achieves this by:

  • Understanding stakeholder perceptions
  • Developing and implementing strategic plans
  • Providing advice and direction to the KIC on community-based initiatives including requests for community investment
  • Identifying value add opportunities

 

ACHIEVEMENTS & CHALLENGES:

Kwinana Industrial Buffer
This year the Kwinana Industrial Buffer was elevated to a standing agenda item for PAC. The Committee recognises the buffer's strategic importance and maintains a watching brief due to ongoing threats and challenges to the integrity and legitimacy of the buffer. This issue has the capacity to profoundly affect the prosperity of the area and future of industrial growth.

Social Media
With increasing popularity and use of social media forums by individuals and community groups, the KIC is faced with the challenge of not only monitoring "traffic" but determining how and when to respond. This will be the subject of ongoing discussion as PAC assists with the development of a social media strategy for the KIC.

Position Papers
Several issues of local significance have dominated over the last twelve months and KIC has written position papers on these, with the most recent being on the buffer and the SAT ruling handed down in September 2016.

Community investment is an important part of the KIC's Corporate Social Responsibility framework.  KIC is proudly associated with the following community partners:

  • City of Kwinana - Kwinana Festival Children's rides
  • City of Rockingham Community Fair
  • Coastcare in the Kwinana Industrial Area
  • Kwinana Industries Council Youth Art Awards
  • Koorliny Arts Centre 2016 Performance Season
  • The Cruising Yacht Club's Cockburn Sound Regatta

Advertorials
Our industry members together with KIC continue to provide comment and topical information through the KIC Community Updates placed in the local papers.  Topics include the Government’s proposed “reading in” of the Industry Protection Area Bill to legislate the buffer;   water conservation;  air quality;  public safety initiatives;  community investment;  and the Education Partnership featuring students participating in the iProjects.
